Daman(Suppression) vs Shaman(Dissolution)

Fixing the terms

In Hindi literature daman means suppression and shaman means dissolution, but in jainism, both are often used interchangeably as supression (as seen in Karmavaad chapter-4)

Here is what I understand so far :

  1. Daman (दमन): Forcefully crushing the urge (Suppression).
  2. Shaman (शमन): Cooling and calming the urge through understanding (Pacification).
  3. Vilayan (विलयन): Melting the urge and the ego completely into the whole (Dissolution).
  4. Mārgāntarīkaraṇa (मार्गांतरीकरण): Changing the path of the urge to another worldly activity (Redirection).
  5. Udāttīkaraṇa (उदात्तीकरण): Elevating the urge into something noble, creative, or divine (Sublimation).

We want to talk about Daman and Shaman here.

Daman is risky!

Forcefully suppressing the urge can easily backfire, we see it happen all the time in ourselves.

Daman is not advisable unless it does not make way for Shaman
