Mahavir Tumhare charnon me - Acharya Tulsi
One-line essence of the entire bhajan
The bhajan is a prayer to transform faith into right vision, discipline into conduct, austerity into karma-shedding, courage into steadfastness, selflessness into compassion, and friendship into universal non-violence, ultimately leading to आत्म विजय (victory over the self)—the essence of the Jain path.
This bhajan is not just devotional poetry—it is a compact spiritual roadmap, a spiritual sankalp (resolve). Almost every line corresponds to a Jain principle: samyak darshan → samyak charitra → nirjara → atmavijay → lok kalyan.
Verse 1
Meaning
May we offer the flowers (kusum) of sincere faith (shraddha) at the feet (charan) of Bhagwan Mahavir.
Deeper meaning
- चरण (feet) symbolizes surrender to Mahavir's qualities, not physical worship.
- May our shraddha bloom like flowers,
- The "flowers" are symbolic. Offering flowers of sincere faith means offering shraddha, vinay (humility), and increasing receptivity towards the Tirthankar's teachings.
Meaning
May we make the high ideals our own and light the lamp (jyoti) of our life.
Deeper meaning
- आदर्श (ideals) = Ahimsa, Aparigraha, Satya, Tap, Samyam, all the Shudh conduct.
- जीवन की ज्योति (inner light) is the awakening of right understanding, vivek (discriminative wisdom), awareness, and self-realization, replacing the darkness of mithyatva (delusion) through spiritual practice.
- Jainism emphasizes becoming like the ideal, not merely admiring it.
Verse 2
Meaning
Through auspicious spiritual practices (sadhan) filled with tap (austerity) and sanyam (self-restraint), and by worshipping (aradhan) the revered (aradhya) Lord...
Deeper meaning
- Tap and sanyam are the primary tools for nirjara and samvar.
- आराधना means living according to the qualities of the Arihants, not merely ritual worship.
Meaning
May we become free from inner impurities (vikar) and attain victory over ourselves (atma-vijay).
सहसा does not mean achanak se, it means by efforts.
Deeper meaning
- The greatest conquest in Jainism is never conquering others.
- It is conquering:
- krodh
- maan
- maya
- lobh
- raag-dvesh
- This is atma-vijay, the real victory that leads toward liberation.
Verse 3
Meaning
May we have unwavering commitment (dridh nishtha) in following our vows (niyam), even if it demands sacrificing our life (प्राण बलि) to uphold our resolve (प्रण = vow).
Deeper meaning
- A Jain practitioner should protect principles, not convenience.
- प्राण बलि symbolizes valuing Dharma above bodily comfort.
- This reflects the spirit of mahavrata, where one does not abandon dharma even under severe hardship.
Meaning
May our inner courage (manobal) become so strong that cowardice (kayarta) never enters us.
Deeper meaning
Spiritual courage means resisting passions and temptations.
Real bravery is enduring parishaha (hardships) without disturbing inner equanimity.
Verse 4
Meaning
May the craving (lolupta) for fame (yash) or status (pad) never trouble us(vyatha - deep pain/sorrow) through inner impurities (vikar).
Deeper meaning
- Cravings for Recognition and position arise due to Vikaar of Mohniye karma, and indulging in it leads to more bondage of mohniye karm.
- Hence we need to stop this cycle by intervening.
- This pad manifests that we do not get trapped by our vikaar.
- As far as action is considered, as a seeker we should never seek recognition and position/power.
Meaning
May we dedicate (arpan) our life selflessly (nishkaam) for the welfare (kalyan) of both ourselves (swa) and others (par).
Deeper meaning
- Jainism begins with self-purification, but a purified person naturally becomes beneficial to all beings.
- स्व कल्याण comes first through self-purification.
- पर कल्याण follows naturally through compassion, teaching, and right conduct.
- Helping others without expectation weakens attachment and ego.
Verse 5
Meaning
May we remain absorbed (लीन) in the refuge (sharan) of the Guru and walk fearlessly (nirbheek) on the path (बाट) of Dharma.
Deeper meaning
-
The Guru provides right direction (margdarshan).
-
Fearlessness comes from conviction in truth, and facilitates practicing truth regardless of social pressure or hardship.
Meaning
May our heart remain unwavering (avichal) in truth (satya) and non-violence (ahimsa), so we may show the right path (supath) to the world.
Deeper meaning
- One teaches Dharma most effectively through conduct (achar), not preaching.
- So in order to show the world the right path, we walk it ourselves as a pre-requisite.
- So for Par- kalyaan, we end up doing swa-kalyan as well !
- Also Living through Satya and Ahimsa inspires others naturally.
Verse 6
Meaning
May there be friendship toward every living being, and may jealousy (ईर्ष्या), envy (मत्सर = resentment at another's success), and pride (अभिमान) disappear.
Deeper meaning
-
This reflects the Jain Bhavana of Maitri:
-
Maitri toward all beings.
-
Freedom from comparison and competition.
-
-
Jealousy and pride strengthen Mohaniya Karma, while universal friendship purifies the soul.
Meaning
May our words (kahni) and actions (karni) become one (iksaar), and may we walk the path shown by Acharya Tulsi. Also a wordplay on Terapanth.
Deeper meaning
-
Spiritual authenticity means there is no gap between speech and conduct.
-
Tulsi refers to Acharya Tulsi, whose path emphasizes Anuvrat, discipline, character, and inner transformation.
-
In Jainism, Charitra (conduct) is the true proof of spiritual progress—not merely knowledge or eloquent speech.
