Sangya

Lord Mahavira classified these 10 mental tendencies into three main groups:

1. First Category: Basic Biological & Physical Instincts
   • Dietary Instinct (आहारसंज्ञा)
   • Fear Instinct (भयसंज्ञा)
   • Sexual Instinct (मैथुनसंज्ञा): The reproductive or carnal impulse.
   • Possessive Instinct (परिग्रहसंज्ञा): The urge to accumulate or hoard material things.
2. Second Category: Emotional Defilements (कषाय वृत्तियाँ)
   • Anger Instinct (क्रोधसंज्ञा)
   • Pride Instinct (मानसंज्ञा)
   • Deceit Instinct (मायासंज्ञा): The impulse of cunningness, trickery, or illusion.
   • Greed Instinct (लोभसंज्ञा)
3. Third Category: Social & Collective Consciousness
   • Social Instinct (लोकसंज्ञा): Awareness regarding public opinion, societal norms, or social behavior.
   • Herd Instinct (ओघसंज्ञा): The mechanical tendency to blindly follow tradition or imitate others without conscious thought.

• The 10 mental tendencies are like intermediary dams. The consciousness (चेतना) that filters through these gates flows forward to influence our behavior (आचरण), but the search for the true origin lies much deeper.
