Samvar

Samvar (संवर)
Core idea: Samvar is not merely "stopping karma." It is the experience of one's chaitanya and existence, through which the causes of Asrava are progressively closed.
- Samvara is the process of stopping the influx of new karma, an essential prerequisite for liberation.
- Bhava Samvara (Psychic Stoppage): This is the internal aspect—the cessation of impure thoughts and passions that make the soul "sticky" to karma. It's about changing the internal state, similar to terminating a rogue process that's consuming system resources.
- Dravya Samvara (Material Stoppage): This is the physical result of Bhava Samvara. When the soul's vibrations are pure, the actual inflow of karmic matter (karma pudgala) is physically blocked.
- Jain scriptures outline 57 distinct methods for achieving samvara. For this lesson, we will focus on the two most foundational and practical sets of these methods: the five samitis and the three guptis.
- Samiti (carefulness) is the discipline of regulating necessary actions—movement, speech, eating, etc.—with constant mindfulness to minimize harm.
- Irya Samiti (Carefulness in Movement):
- Bhasha Samiti (Carefulness in Speech):
- Eshana Samiti (Carefulness in Eating)
- ** adana-Nikshepana Samiti (Carefulness in Handling Objects)**
- Paristhapanika Samiti (Carefulness in Disposal)
- Gupti (restraint) is the discipline of curbing the very sources of karmic influx by controlling the mind, speech, and body, often through silence and stillness.
- Mano Gupti (Restraint of Mind):
- Vachan Gupti (Restraint of Speech):
- K aya Gupti (Restraint of Body):
- Titiksha - 22 parishay- The 22 parisahas pertain to the enduring of hardship and while doing so remaining in a state of serenity and equanimity so that all karmas may be destroyed. These are more prominently followed by sadhus and sadhvis.

Asrava = karma ke aane ka khula darwaza
-
Samvar = us darwaze ka band hona
-
Samvar ka deeper meaning sirf karma rokna nahi, balki apne chaitanya aur astitva ka anubhav hai.
-
Asrava aur Samvar ko sirf external actions ke level par nahi samajhna:
- Bahar ka behaviour secondary hai.
- Fundamental question hai: andar ka parinaam kya hai?
- Raga-dwesh ke parinaam hain -> Asrava.
- Chaitanya ka anubhav hai -> Samvar.
Samvar aur Asrava ka relationship
- Asrava ke main causes:
- Raga-dweshatmak parinaam
- Man, vachan aur kaya ki chanchalta
- Inke through karma pudgal attract aur accumulate hota hai.
- Raga-dwesh -> triggers Chanchalta -> attracts karma, and Kqshay glues it.
- This tendency to allow karma bandhan is Asrava
- Samvar isi process ko reverse karta hai:
- Raga-dwesh ko reduce karo.
- Chanchalta ko control karo.
- Chaitanya ki taraf attention lao.
- -> Asrava ke doors close hone lagte hain.
Samvar ke practical components
- Sanyam
- Indriyon ka sanyam
- Man ka sanyam
- Vaasnaon ka sanyam
- Purpose -> uncontrolled tendencies ko rokna.
- Charitra
- Shuddh aacharan.
- Jo internally samta hai, uska external expression shuddh conduct me hota hai.
- Pratikraman
- Past ke wrong parinaamon ka analysis and praschyatap, and remembering not to repeat it.
- Pratyakhyan
- Future ke liye restraint.
- "Main dobara usi wrong parinaam me nahi jaunga."
- Inka temporal relationship:
- Past -> Pratikraman
- Present -> Samvar
- Future -> Pratyakhyan
- Isliye present moment is central:
- Past ko Pratikraman se clean karo.
- Future ko Pratyakhyan se protect karo.
- Present me chaitanya me raho -> Samvar.
- And inculcate it all via Charitra!
Samvar ke progressive stages
Samvar ek binary state nahi hai ki "hai ya nahi hai". We need to enhance it progressively with deepening jagruti :
-
Samyaktva Samvar
- First shift: reality aur apne chaitanya ki right orientation.
- Mithyatva ki direction se nikal kar chaitanya ki taraf movement.
- Raga-dwesh ka root gradually weaken hota hai.
-
Vrata Samvar
- Jagruti ko deliberate restraints me convert karna.
- Vrat sirf external restriction nahi:
- It is a conscious boundary against behaviours that reinforce Asrava.
- Samyaktva se jo understanding aayi, Vrata usko conduct me stabilize karta hai.
-
Apramada Samvar
- Ab sirf rules follow karna enough nahi.
- Constant vigilance (apramada) develop hoti hai.
- Pramad = awareness ka lapse.
- Apramad = chaitanya se continuously connected rehna.
- Important practical shift:
- "Main galat kaam nahi karunga" se
- "Main apne parinaam ko continuously observe karunga."
-
Akashaya Samvar
- Kashay progressively weaken hote hain.
- Raga-dwesh ke deeper emotional roots dissolve hote hain.
- Samvar ab behavioural restraint se deeper inner non-reactivity banne lagta hai.
-
Ayoga Samvar
- Final stage.
- Man, vaani aur sharir ki activity itself ceases.
- Karma ke influx ke liye activity-based mechanism completely stops.
- Ye liberation ke immediately prior state ki direction hai.
-
Overall progression:
- Samyaktva -> right orientation
- Vrata -> conscious restraint
- Apramada -> continuous vigilance
- Akashaya -> kashaylessness
- Ayoga -> activitylessness
Samvar ka practical path
-
Start by identifying Asrava ke doors:
- Mere raga kahan activate hote hain?
- Dwesh kahan activate hota hai?
- Kaunsi indriya repeatedly mujhe bahar kheenchti hai?
- Kaunse thoughts baar baar mujhe emotionally capture karte hain?
- Kahan man, vaani aur sharir unnecessarily chanchal hote hain?
-
Then intervene at the parinaam level:
- Trigger ko eliminate karna primary solution nahi.
- Trigger aane par apna internal response observe karna more fundamental hai.
- Raga-dwesh ko recognize karo.
- Usko nourish mat karo.
- Chaitanya ki taraf attention return karo.
-
Practical loop:
- Trigger -> parinaam notice -> raga/dwesh identify -> awareness -> return to chaitanya -> samta
- Repeated practice -> reaction ki intensity aur duration kam.
- -> Asrava weak.
- -> Samvar stronger.
Pratikraman as immediate correction
- Thought ya parinaam aaya:
- Agar awareness immediately aa gayi -> usse cleanse karo.
- Agar us thought ko repeatedly entertain kiya:
- Granthi develop ho sakti hai.
- Agar immediately pratikraman hua:
- Karmic granthi ko strengthen hone se roka ja sakta hai.
- Practical:
- "Mujhe gussa aaya" par rukna nahi.
- Observe:
- Gussa kis raga/dwesh se aaya?
- Main usko justify to nahi kar raha?
- Kya main us thought ko repeat karke strengthen kar raha hoon?
- Recognize -> release -> return.
Pratyakhyan as future protection
- Pratikraman past ko address karta hai.
- Pratyakhyan future ko address karta hai.
- Isliye dono ko ek loop ki tarah use karo:
- Past mistake -> Pratikraman
- Future restraint -> Pratyakhyan
- Present awareness -> Samvar
Indriyon ko bahar se andar lana
- Indriyon ki habitual outward movement ko reverse karo.
- Man ko bhi bahirmukhi bhatakne se antarmukhi lao.
- Example:
- Body ko sirf object ki tarah dekhna nahi.
- Body ke andar ke prakampan observe karna.
- This is the direction of Preksha.
- Important relationship:
- Same sensory system jo normally Asrava ka route ban sakta hai,
- awareness ke saath Samvar ka route ban sakta hai.
- Hence:
- Asrava ke doors hi Samvar ke doors ban sakte hain.
Samta: Samvar ka lived experience
-
Samvar ko test karne ka practical criterion:
- Kya kisi situation me chaitanya ka anubhav ho raha hai?
- Kya sirf apne existence ka awareness hai?
- Ya saath me raga-dwesh bhi chal raha hai?
-
Ideal direction:
- Behaviour ho sakta hai.
- Interaction ho sakta hai.
- Action ho sakta hai.
- Lekin andar samta bani rahe.
-
Therefore:
- Samvar ka matlab actionlessness nahi.
- Action ke beech raga-dwesh ki absence is the deeper target.
Daily practice model
- Morning
- Short chaitanya awareness practice.
- Sankalp: aaj parinaam ko observe karna hai.
- During triggers
- Stop.
- Identify: raga, dwesh, kashay or neutral awareness?
- Observe bodily sensations / prakampan.
- Don't feed the reaction.
- Return attention to chaitanya.
- After a lapse
- Immediate Pratikraman.
- Don't rationalize or repeatedly replay the event.
- Before repeating a pattern
- Pratyakhyan.
- Consciously decide the alternative response.
- End of day
- Review:
- Where did Asrava happen?
- Where did I catch it early?
- Where did I remain in Samta?
- Where did awareness lapse into Pramad?
- Review:
- Over time:
- Reaction noticed earlier
- -> reaction nourished less
- -> raga-dwesh weaker
- -> chaitanya awareness longer
- -> Samvar stronger
The deepest distinction
- External restraint
- "Main ye nahi karunga."
- Inner Samvar
- "Mere andar ye raga-dwesh ka parinaam hi na chale."
- External restraint is useful because it creates conditions for inner restraint.
- But the deeper progression is:
- Behavioural control -> mental vigilance -> parinaam ki shuddhi -> chaitanya ka anubhav.
- Therefore the real question is not:
- "Maine kitne actions control kiye?"
- It is:
- "Kitne moments me main raga-dwesh ke bajay apne chaitanya me tha?"
One-line reconstruction:
Raga-dweshatmak parinaam -> Asrava -> karmabandhan; chaitanya ka anubhav -> Samvar -> Asrava ka band hona; Samyaktva -> Vrata -> Apramada -> Akashaya -> Ayoga ke through Samvar progressively deepen hota hai.
